Datatrans Communications Limited design, provide and install of all aspects of broadcast radio transmission services – from the microphone and play-out system, through to mixers, on air telephone systems, the studio-to-transmitter links and the transmitter and antenna.
The company specialises in the supply installation and maintenance of both FM and AM (Medium Wave) transmission equipment and services for Local Radio, Community Radio and Restricted Service licenses. Experience in these areas extends back to the early 1990s.
Chris Parkin – Managing Director
Prior to forming Datatrans Communications Limited the managing director Chris Parkin who is a qualified electrical engineer, was jointly responsible for the operation of several Restricted Service Licences broadcasting to Harrogate. Following the success of these broadcasts, Stray FM Limited was formed and successfully applied for the Independent Local Radio licence for the Harrogate district which commenced broadcasting in 1995.
Chris was responsible for the installation of both the studio equipment and the FM transmission equipment at Stray FM when the station commenced broadcasting in 1995.
Chris has also managed the operation of Restricted Service Licences in the Yorkshire Dales and was responsible for the formation of Yorkshire Dales Radio Limited. This company successfully applied for the Independent Radio Licence for the Yorkshire Dales with Skipton which because of the terrain of the Dales was an AM (Medium Wave) licence.
Regrettably, the then current suppliers and installers of AM transmission equipment failed to honour the quotations they had provided prior to the licence application and a decision was made to undertake the installation in-house of both the 1kW and 100watt systems. Both systems (The 1kW system used a 2.5kW transmitter feeding a 37m mast and the 100watt 250 watt transmitter feeding a 22m mast) and the related studio to transmitter links were successfully installed on time and at a cost of less than 60% of the licence application budget prices.
As a result of this work Datatrans Communication Limited was formed in 1998 and has operated and maintained these transmitters for Yorkshire Dales Radio, and latterly UKRD.
Since 1998 various additional AM transmission systems have been designed installed and maintained. These include a transmitter, antenna and studio at Richmond, North Yorkshire for Fresh AM and three low-power Medium Wave relays with antennas at Ilkley, Settle and Pateley Bridge.
Complete FM transmission systems have also been installed at Richmond, Ilkley and Pateley Bridge for Fresh Radio Limited.
FM broadcast equipment for Restricted Radio Licences have been installed for several organisations in the North of England
Datatrans Communications was responsible for the design and installation and maintenance of the AM transmission system for JCom the Community Radio Station in Leeds. This was particularly challenging because of the very restricted budget for Community Radio and the absence of a site normally considered suitable for medium wave transmission.
Datatrans Communications has also provided technical advice for local and community radio licence applications and subsequent installations and developments, both FM and AM.
